In this next article in our continuing history of chairs we’re going to pick up with Chinese chairs.

There is not much known about ancient Chinese chairs. What we do know is that during the Tang dynasty, which was from 618 to 907 AD, higher seats started to appear among the Chinese elite and then soon spread to the more common people of China. By the 12th century, sitting on the floor, which at one time was what every Chinese person did, was becoming less common even though in other Asian countries the custom of sitting on the floor continued.

We then move on to the Renaissance period. In Europe especially, it is because of the Renaissance period that the chair became a symbol of authority in the European State. It became custom that the only people who had chairs were those of authority or royalty or those who could simply afford them as they were very expensive. However, once the idea of privilege faded away, the chair became more common in everyone’s household.

Once chairs started to be manufactured for common people it was immediately noticeable that the chairs themselves reflected the fashions of the times. Over the course of the Renaissance period chairs have varied in size, shape and sturdiness. They were fashioned not only after women’s dress but after men’s as well. One way to find out is to put your hand down on the center of the table and rock it back and forth; if the piece is well balanced, it will stand firm. Many furniture themes are associated with a particular time in history. Federal theme furniture, in particular, is associated with the birth of the independent United States.

Federal Theme Furniture

In 1783, the Peace Treaty of Paris was signed giving the American Colonies their independence from Great Britain. The new nation was to bring many innovations of their own to the world stage, and one was a new and distinct theme of furniture making and design that is called the Federal Theme. The Federal period is usually dated from 1780 to 1820. The theme replaced the earlier American Chippendale theme, but the connection with the mother country was not completely broken. Simply put, American Federal theme furniture did retain some of the British influence.

It was a time of elegance in the emerging nation. Ladies would be sipping tea in finely appointed drawing rooms, while the men smoked and discussed the politics of the times in spacious libraries. If you are a scrapbook enthusiast, then you know how those scrapbook supplies can add up quickly. Indian Sheesham

Furniture made from Indian Sheesham is provided in its natural state. It will appear polished due to the natural oil occuring in the wood. You should wipe your furniture with a damp cloth to remove any dust from manufacturing. The oil on the surface will evaporate after a few days outdoors. It is the oil that remains below the surface that gives the wood its durability. Some of these oils may bleed out following the first few rainfalls, and initially, you will want to bring your cushions in when the furniture is wet. Once the furniture has begun to form the silver-grey patina, it is no longer necessary to bring the cushions indoors.

To clean the furniture without removing the silver-grey patina simply use soap and water. Should you want to maintain the golden brown color, we recommend a teak sealer be applied every 12-18 months. Wood sealers are usually solvent based with water-like viscosity containing mould, ultra-violet light and moisture protection. The Wood protector should be applied after cleaning and drying out your furniture. We do not recommend painting Indian Sheesham as the wood’s natural oils can affect how the paint adheres. Teak has qualities unlike any other wood as it has the ability to withstand the rigors of adverse climates.

We have been looking for a suitable massage chair for some time now. My mother not only has cancer of the spine but it has spread to her hip and to top it all she has cervical spondilitis in her neck and shoulder. A home is, generally, for keeps. One may keep on relocating from one place to another for short-term immediacy. But we identify a home as a place where generations can find their roots. And this ancestral home is unique in every sense of the term - the aura, the fragrance, the rooms, the furniture etc. associated with the place is unparalleled. Especially with all the exquisite Amish made furniture it can be very nostalgic. But the comforts of the ancestral home cannot be enjoyed forever. One has to move out of the place and sometimes, out of the town or even country to earn his livelihood. Albeit for a short period of time, one has to relocate out of one’s known environs.

Each relocation brings with it its own concerns. The first concern is, of course, the housing needs. And after housing, the furnishing of the house saps a lot of energy. The furnishing becomes all the more vital because the spending instinct does not get enough motivation for short-term expenditure. If the needs are just for a couple of years, then there is absolutely no need to buy expensive but desirable Amish handcrafted furniture at extremely competitive rents. (more…)
