City-hopping in Europe with Eboniste’s wooden cocktail tables December 26
London, Berlin, Rome. What do these three have in common? Well, they are three of the biggest, most cosmopolitan, and most popular cities in Western Europe, cities known as major business and tourist destinations, multicultural, and rich in history. But aside from that, what else? Well, they are the names of three cocktail tables from Eboniste.
Eboniste reminds me of the word ébéniste, which is Frenc for cabinetmaker. It turns out that the English word is quite similar too: ebonist, though it isn’t used much all that much. As the word implies, those French cabinetmakers of yore used to specialize in ebony, a kind of hardwood. The Rome, Berlin, and Paris tables from Eboniste aren’t made of ebony, though; in fact, they are constructed from elm. Still, they are modern, attractive tables that can be used in commercial settings, for instance as reception area furniture.
Let’s take a sneak peek at these sleek and modern wooden tables.
The London Table measures 15 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 22 inches high. It’s a small, simple table yet it has a few distinctive features, such as the bold arch at the base and the lines on the edge that make it look like a picture frame somehow.
The Berlin Table is described as having a Biedermeier silhouette, reminiscent of mid-19th-century furniture design in Germany, which focused on utilitarian aspects. A concession to contemporary modernity can be seen in its geometric shape. It measures 25 inches wide, 19 inches deep and 23 inches high.
The Rome Table, named after the Eternal City, looks the most modern among the three, in my opinion. The way it flares out in the middle certainly is a departure from the more conventional shapes of the other two. It measures 15 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 22 inches high.
All three tables have several things in common: they include adjustable levelers; they are waxed and finished in matte polyurethane, and are available in mineral black or mineral brown stain. Their understated elegance yet bold design aren’t hindrances to finding bar chairs to go along with them.
