Laser-cut wooden table by Kinkyform and NOPATTERN:Sharply visual appeal December 4
I was browsing some of numerous furniture design blogs out there and came across this interesting piece of work over at the Reuben Miller blog: a laser-cut table. It still makes me shake my head in wonder at how people use both art and technology together to create something unique and, attractive, and functional.
Made in Germany, the table is the result of a collaboration between Chuck Anderson and Lars Amhoff. The artwork adorning the table’s surface and legs was supplied by Anderson (who runs a company called Nopattern) while the physical creation of the table was done by Amhoff (via his Kinkyform Art and Design group).
The table measures 32 x 25 x 18 inches, roughly the dimensions of your regular coffee table. From the picture, it almost has the appearance of colored cardboard, especially the legs. But in reality it’s so much hardier and more durable than that. The wood is laser cut and the art was transferred via screen printing. Both sides are varnished, making it scratch-proof and waterproof. What differentiates it from the fold is the etched artwork. The bold lines and colors sort of remind me of sophisticated graffiti, or illustrations in action comic books. Strong stuff, definitely not the hearts and flowers type of illustration that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
We won’t be seeing it paired with contract reception chairs in many commercial establishments, though. This laser-cut wooden table is being made available in an extremely limited way. According to the Kinkyform web site, there are only fifty pieces to be released so chances are it won’t make an appearance at the local Starbucks. A pity; the table’s bold appearance sure would wake me even more up in addition to the caffeine in a tall café latte.
