Outdoor furniture for large groups: The Gargantua garden table by Dirk Wynants

dirk_wynants_gargantua_garden_table.jpgMany restaurants have outdoor sections, which are popular with patrons especially if the weather is nice on a certain day or night.  Some of the ones I’ve been to are really cool: they were the venues for wedding receptions and birthday parties. One of them had a terrific view of a volcano in a lake. That kind of scenery would be hard to beat inside a restaurant, no matter how attractive the design.  Whether your restaurant is holding a big event or not, and you have a garden location, it’s important to have some large tables to accommodate large groups of patrons. One good example of a large table suitable for commercial purposes is the Gargantua Garden Table by Dirk Wynants.

Wynants founded a company called Extremis, whose way to success was paved by this very table. Although the Gargantua was designed for residential use, it can certainly be used in a similar fashion in a commercial setting, if your garden restaurant needs a few big tables. Small bistro area furniture wouldn’t be enough – unless you’re fine with constantly moving small tables together to accommodate large parties.

What’s great about the Gargantua Garden Table is that the benches are adjustable. It seats a group of eight, but it can be extended to accommodate as much as 12 people. Also, the benches themselves can be used to extend the table top. Another plus: sections of the bench are removable, so accommodating guests on wheelchairs poses no problem.

The table’s benches are made of teak, the tabletop is of jatoba wood – with a stainless steel center – while the structure supporting the benches and the frame is made of galvanized metal. The wood is left unpainted, and it will acquire a certain patina over time. Note that untreated wood can also warp over time. Other factors, like dirt and weather can also degrade the quality, so proper maintenance is needed.
